Vault Visit: Amtrak derails, injuring multiple people in Mebane

The locomotive and three coach cars derailed and caught fire after an Amtrak train derailed in Mebane back in May 2010.

MEBANE, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! So, to celebrate, we're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On May 13, 2010, a train derailment shocked Mebane. An Amtrak train hit a truck stuck on the railroad crossing.

The locomotive and three coach cars derailed and caught fire.

The train had been traveling from Raleigh to Charlotte and had 36 passengers aboard. 

Amtrak said 12 passengers and one crew member were hurt. Other passengers were taken to a nearby community center. 

A bus later took them to their destinations.
