Vault Visit: Looking back at a roadside dumping issue in Guilford County

In 1971, a car, an oven, bedsprings, and a lot of trash were dumped along the side of a road in Guilford County.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — This year, WFMY News 2 turns 75! To celebrate, we are opening the WFMY News 2 Vault.

Today, we're going back to 1971, when roadside dumping was causing some big problems.

What a mess it was.

A car, an oven, bedsprings, and lots of trash were all dumped along the side of a road in Guilford County.

WFMY News 2 spoke with the county environmental health director. He said most people dumped their trash illegally because the legal dump was too far away. His team searched dump sites and found people's addresses in the trash. When contacted about it, people usually said someone else stole their trash.

“We're at a loss to understand why we have so many garbage thieves that go around Guilford County stealing garbage and hauling it out on the roadside this way,” the environmental health director said.

If junk was dumped on the state highway, the highway commission cleaned it up, which meant tax money was paid for it.
