How many people have died from Helene in North Carolina?

Our state has the most storm-related deaths.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Western North Carolina was one of the areas hardest hit by Helene late last week. In the aftermath of the devastating storm, hundreds still remain missing.

The latest death toll shows at least 77 people in North Carolina have died as a result of Helene, CBS News reports.

Forty of those deaths come from Buncombe County, where nearly 70,000 homes and businesses still remain without power.

In South Carolina, 33 people have been confirmed dead from the storm. At least 25 more have been killed in Georgia, and another 13 in Florida.

CBS News says AccuWeather's preliminary estimate for the total damage and economic loss from Helene to be between $95 and $110 billion in the United States.

The North Carolina National Guard has deployed 800 guardsmen and 275 vehicles to western North Carolina and is planning to send more, according to a Tuesday update.
