I-40 East out of Buncombe County is now open

The highway heading east is now open, providing a way for some residents to leave western North Carolina.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — For days, many western North Carolina residents had no way out of the destruction Tropical Storm Helene left behind. 

Many still do not, but as of early Tuesday morning, Buncombe County Government - where the city of Asheville is seated - posted that I-40 East out of the county had opened.

Hundreds of roads remain impassable in the region. NCDOT says I-40 is closed in multiple locations. Here's a list of latest road closures.
