A gas station's awning collapses after storms, Yadkinville natives react

The awning over the gas pumps at Fast Phil's in Yadkinville toppled over due to storms rolling through Saturday. Yadkinville natives react to the shocking scene.

YADKINVILLE, N.C. — Downed power lines and a destroyed car, that's all that remains from from an incident that happened Saturday in Yadkinville.

The awning over the gas pumps at Fast Phil's in toppled over due to storms rolling through.

WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman spoke with first responders and those working nearby about the shock they felt seeing a beloved gas station take a hit like this.

One of them being an employee at the neighboring Subway, Amber Childress, who saw the entire thing unfold, "I just saw it kind of tip over and it was just crazy."

First responders with the Yadkinville Volunteer Fire Department are calling it a structural collapse.

It's something Assistant Fire Chief Devin Doss said they were prepared to handle but do not deal with on a regular basis.

"It's definitely something we don't run into everyday, or even every month," Doss said.

The storm was so bad, and so loud... Childress said if she didn't watch the awning fall herself, she would have never known that it happened.

"You didn't hear noise or anything, all you heard was just rain," Childress said.

What makes the entire situation more crazy, Childress said this is only her second day working at the Subway connected to Fast Phil's.

"It was a great way to start work," Childress laughs.

It's a situation she can laugh at now because luckily, no one was hurt.

Not only was the awning damaged from the fall, so was a car in the parking lot.

Doss said thankfully, no one was trapped inside the car and both the driver and passenger left without a scratch.

"We have spoken to them and thankfully they are okay — a little shaken up but we are very thankful that they are not injured," Doss said.

As it turns out, Fast Phil's is a staple in Yadkinville.

"We all used to come up here and get gas and everything," Childress said.

"Fast Phil's has been here ever since I was a kid. I've live here you know, 30 years, so hopefully they can get it back up and running," Doss said.

Both Yadkinville natives, looking forward to the day the awning sits over the gas pumps at Fast Phil's once again.

While Subway was able to open up Sunday, Fast Phil's did not.

As of now, WFMY News 2 does not know when the gas station will open back up or when the awning will be replaced.
