Victim shares story after Greensboro hit-and-run that injured 15 people

Rising NC A&T Senior, Caulin Avery, spoke out about the hit-and-run off South Eugene Street that injured 15 people in March. The driver was recently arrested.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the first time, WFMY News 2 heard from a victim of that Greensboro hit-and-run that injured 15 people earlier this year.

The victims were at a block party when it happened. Zamyria Maness was arrested and charged with the crime Wednesday.

A North Carolina A&T student shared his story with WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman.

His name is Caulin Avery, he's a rising senior at A&T. He said when he went to that block party in March. He would have never guessed he would be leaving with a concussion and a badly injured leg.

March 29, 2024 started out as a normal day for 20-year-old Avery.

"I was excited to go to a party, it was just a regular day for a college student honestly," Avery said.

He was among the large crowd attending a block party near South Eugene and West Whittington Streets that day.

Later in the day, at around 7:20 p.m. while the large block party crowd was dispersing, Greensboro Police said a black Nissan sedan hit 15 people and did not stop. 20-year-old Maness was driving.

Avery was one of the victims, "next thing you know, I'm on the sidewalk and I was hit by a car," Avery said.

According to police, none of the injuries caused by the hit-and-run were considered life-threatening. Some of the more serious injuries were broken bones. Still, the force of the car was enough to knock Avery unconscious.

"I don't remember being hit but I remember waking up and then my friends are surrounding me and they're just like, 'wow'" Avery said.

His injuries consisted of a concussion and serious road rash on his left leg, "my head was dazed and I just remember having a lot of blood on my knee," Avery said.

He said he had a hard time walking over the next week, barely able to move his ankles, "it was pretty hard honestly but I got through it," Avery said.

The entire situation gave him a new lease on life, "I could have been dead and it could have been like way worse. That's how I look at it, it could have been way worse," Avery said.

Maness faces a slew of charges. Alongside felony hit-and-run, she faces several charges of assault with a deadly weapon and operating the vehicle she used to hit 15 people without a license.

To be clear, NC A&T has confirmed that this crash was not associated with the university or campus events.

As for the driver being arrested, Avery said he hopes it provides closure to fellow victims, especially those hurt worse than he was.
