GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tuesday, Jan. 9 is expected to be a very active weather day, starting in the morning and ending in the evening.
With heavy rain, gusty winds, and a severe storm risk, some school systems in the Piedmont have decided to let students out early and some districts are even closing as a precaution.
Governor Roy Cooper issued a "state of emergency" ahead of severe storm risks as well.

Alamance Burlington School System:
- ABSS will dismiss elementary students at 11 a.m.
- Middle and High School will dismiss at noon.
All after-school activities including after-school child care are canceled. Staff will have the option to work remotely once bus routes are completed on Tuesday.
Asheboro City Schools:
- Closing 3 hours early. There will be no after-school programs.
Caswell County Schools:
Information about dismissals or closures for Caswell County is unknown at this time. We will update you when we learn more.
Davidson County Schools:
Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9
Davidson Charter Academy:
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9
Guilford County Schools:
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9. — Optional Teacher Workday
Guilford Preparatory Academy:
- All Classes Canceled
Lexington City Schools:
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9
Martinsville City Schools:
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9
Mount Airy City Schools
Due to increased flooding in the area, schools dismissing early.
Randolph County:
- RCS will have a 3-hour early release.
Rockingham County Schools:
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9 — Optional Teacher Workday
Thomasville City Schools:
- TPS and LDES to dismiss at 11:00 a.m.
- Thomasville Middle and High School to dismiss at noon — Tuesday, Jan. 9
Wilkes County Schools
Mount Pleasant Elementary School closed due to water utilities issue.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools:
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan.9
- Closed, Tuesday, Jan. 9
