Kernersville community helps family rebuild after house fire destroys everything

Mary Hall was able to save her three young boys and pets but their home was a total loss. Now, the Kernersville community is showing up for her.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — Emily Brown made this post just hours after her friend Mary Hall lost everything in a house fire, asking neighbors to help the mother of three through donations.

Neither could've imagined what happened next.

Hall managed to save her three small children and pets from a house fire, "I don't feel like I have a head on my shoulders right now. I can't think or comprehend anything."

Fire investigators said a toy battery might've exploded, igniting the fire in the middle of the night. Smoke detectors likely saved the lives of Hall and her three children under the age of six.

"I couldn't imagine just my kids losing everything, you know cause we put them first you know, our needs go to the back burner but I couldn't imagine you know my kids losing everything," Brown said.

Brown, of Winston-Salem, knows the Hall family and also has three young kids.

As soon as she saw what happened, she had to do something to help. She started with a social media post, "it exploded on Facebook, I had hundreds of people message me."

Clothes, diapers, toys and more; Brown received constant offers for donations. She said Hall is overwhelmed but extremely grateful.

"It's really the community that is helping me to keep going," Hall said.

Hall said the donations have really touched her, but for her boys... well, those donations have changed their lives.

"My boys have taken every single toy that has been given to them and I mean, they are, they are clinging to it, it is their security, their hope," Hall said.

Both Hall and Brown said they've been blown away by the support.

"They have so much to process right now but i know that she is still so grateful for fulfilling these needs that they're going to need for weeks to come," Brown said.

Brown said the Hall family is still in need of a lot, mainly 5T sized boy clothes, things like wipes and diapers, really anything that can make their lives a little easier.
