3 children, adult escape house fire in Kernersville

Kernersville fire crews said the real heroes of this house fire were the smoke alarms.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — Three small children and an adult escaped a house fire in Kernersville Thursday morning, according to fire crews.

The house fire happened around 3:30 a.m. on the 2500 block of Bethel Church Road. Crews arrived on the scene and controlled the fire within 30 minutes without injuries.

Fire crews said the real heroes of this incident were the working smoke alarms inside the home. Without those fire alarms, the outcome of the house fire could have been different.

"I heard my son’s smoke alarm go off and so I ran into his room," said Mary Hall, who lived in the home. "There was a little bit of smoke coming out of his closet, and I opened it a little bit more and, there was just clouds. so I told him to get up and just run straight to the car get in the car and by that time the smoke alarm had woke up my three-year-old and I told him to run to the car as he could. I grabbed my baby. I got him to the car, I called 911 and I kicked the animals out and by that time it was so full of smoke, but there was no going back in."

Hall told WFMY News 2 that firefighters said the fire might have been started by a battery inside one of her son's toys.

All four people and three pets who lived in the home made it out unharmed. That said, Hall told WFMY News 2 the family does not have renters insurance, and all their belongings were destroyed by the blaze.

Hall provided these photos to WFMY News 2, showing the devastating aftermath of the fire indoors.
