Kernersville family hopes for answers after woman found dead

Kernersville police said they found Sherry Standridge last Friday, November 15, dead in a parking lot on Old Winston Road.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — Kernersville police said they found a 61-year-old woman last Friday, November 15, dead in a parking lot on Old Winston Road. They haven't said if they believe foul play is involved.

WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman spoke with Sherry's loved ones who said they just want answers: Why did Sherry die and how? They said they won't stop until they know for sure.

"What happened to my mom?" Sherry's oldest daughter, Melissa Standridge said.

Melissa said her mom was an animal lover and the best mom she could've asked for,

"She was our mother, she was an aunt, a friend," Melissa said.

She said her mother also struggled with drug addiction. She and her family want to know more about the circumstances surrounding Sherry's death.

"I don't want to just wonder what happened to her. I want to know what happened to her so I can have some closure and some peace in my life because what happened to her was already awful and just not knowing has been the hard part and just feeling like no one cared in the beginning," Melissa said.

Loved one said they felt as if her case wasn't taken seriously at first because she was an addict. Days later they said they got another call from police telling them they'd give the case another look.

"It was a huge relief to find out she was getting her full autopsy and somebody was looking into what caused my mother's death because I want to make sure you know, that no one hurt her," Melissa said.

No matter how she died, family just wants clarity, "if she OD'd or she died of natural causes, I wanna know. If someone sold her something, I wanna know who done it and they need to be charged," Melissa said.

That clarity will start to bring closure and peace her loved ones crave right now, "I don't want to live the rest of my life wondering what happened to my mom," Melissa said.

WFMY News 2 spoke to Kernersville police today about this investigation. They told us the case is still ongoing but wouldn't elaborate.
