Officers responded to a call at a warehouse parking lot in the 700 block of Pegg Road, where they found 28-year-old Gerard O. Lyons of Greensboro.

According to investigators, a man driving a box truck hit Lyons as he was walking through the parking lot. At the time of the crash, the truck’s front windshield was covered in frost, obstructing the driver’s view.

Gerard Lyons was known to friends and family as 'Big G'.

Lyons was a father of a six-year-old daughter named Mia and was a former football player at Woodland High School.

Lyons also studied at Livingstone College in Salisbury where he met his girlfriend Jhordan Gunter. She spoke with our WFMY News 2's Taylor Leverett about the day she learned about the accident.

"I lost it. I just broke down. Once I got the call it was maybe like a little before 5:30 a.m. I want to say. It was his work partner that called me and was like hurry up you need to get to the warehouse," Gunter said.

His mother Dinisha Lyons says the days since the accident have been the hardest. She says she is devastated and hurt knowing the accident could have been prevented.

"It's still hard to believe but being here and he is not here that's what makes me know that it is real. I don't want to accept it," Lyons said.
