GREENSBORO, N.C. — A fraternity at UNC-Greensboro is suspended for 10 years over allegations of hazing.
The university said Sigma Phi Epsilon is under investigation for hazing and recruitment violations.
School leaders haven't given specifics of the alleged hazing or when they first learned about it but made it clear - it won't be tolerated.
"UNCG is committed to hosting fraternities and sororities on our campus that uphold strong values and advance student success. The University does not tolerate actions or activities that are counter to our values and standards," UNCG officials shared in a statement.
WFMY News 2 reached out to Sigma Phi Epsilon headquarters about the allegations. The fraternity's headquarters said there's no place for hazing in its brotherhood, but then expressed disappointment in UNCG's decision on the suspension, calling it "unilateral."
The UNCG fraternity is the latest Greek Life organization in the Triad to be suspended over allegations of hazing. An Elon sorority was recently suspended for two years.
UNCG's full statement:
UNCG said, "Suspension of an organization carries the immediate revocation or restriction of University Affiliation. Fraternity and Sorority Life at UNCG is to support the community that encourages academic, personal and leadership development of its members. UNCG is committed to hosting fraternities and sororities on our campus that uphold strong values and advance student success. The University does not tolerate actions or activities that are counter to our values and standards."
Sigma Phi Epsilon headquarters' full statement:
"Sigma Phi Epsilon Headquarters has received word of the suspension of our North Carolina Omicron chapter at UNC-Greensboro by the university. SigEp’s purpose is to develop balanced leaders in a safe environment that fosters dignity and respect, and hazing has no place in our experience. We are disappointed at this unilateral decision made by the university. As our track record shows, SigEp seeks to collaborate with our host institutions in ensuring the safety of our students, and, when included by our host institutions, we do not hesitate to take swift accountability steps when student safety is at risk. We will work with stakeholders involved to gather information and determine next steps for the chapter."
