WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A woman is dead after a fiery crash in Winston-Salem Thursday.
Winston-Salem police said they responded to a crash involving three vehicles at the intersection of Thomasville Road and Baden Road around 7 a.m.
One of the cars, officers said was on fire.
After initial investigation, officers discovered that a 2017 Chevrolet was traveling north on Thomasville Road and slowing to make a left turn on Baden Road.
A 2019 Freightliner was traveling north on Thomasville Road behind the 2017 Chevrolet. Police said for unknown reasons the 2019 Freightliner failed to slow down and hit the back of the 2017 Chevrolet pushing it into the opposite lane of travel where it was then hit by a 2019 Nissan.
The 2017 Chevrolet then caught on fire.
Police said the drivers of the 2019 Freightliner and the 2019 Nissan were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Officers said the driver of the 2017 Chevrolet, Katharine Jones Benton, 59, was pronounced dead on the scene.
The WSPD Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) responded to the scene and assumed investigative responsibility for the crash.
