Family of the 23-year-old shot to death in Greensboro speaks out

23-year-old Shango Adams of Greensboro was shot and killed on Van Wert Street. His family is left searching for justice and answers.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Shango Adams was taken from his family just days after his 23rd birthday. They're in shock as they get ready bury him while police look for his killer.

Aliyah Adams, Shango's sister, said she'll never forget the day she got the call that her baby brother had been shot and killed.

"It's a feeling that you never forget. You can't breathe, you can't walk, all you can do it scream," Aliyah said.

Friday was her first day back at work since the shooting that took her brother's life on October 17th.

Greensboro Police said they responded to Van Wert Street overnight where they found the 23-year-old shot to death. Police said someone shot Shango at one location but they found him elsewhere.

His family is desperate for witnesses to come forward.

"Imagine if it was your family member… would you want them shot and then moved and then the case to go cold? He was only 23, that's not fair," Aliyah said.

Adding to the pain of this tragedy, Shango had just celebrated his birthday 12 days prior to his murder.

"He was full of life, you know what I'm saying? He enjoyed his birthdays and holidays and times that he got to spend with his family members and the people that loved him," Aliyah said.

She admits she was Shango's favorite sister and one of her favorite things to do was cook for him.

"He loved to eat. You know what I'm saying? That's one thing that he would call me and say like, "sis, you cooking today? Can I come get a plate?" Aliyah said.

His father Carlton Adams came down from New Jersey when he heard the news. Simply put, he said the gun violence has to stop.

"You young kids gotta put down these guns, it ain't worth it; dying, going to jail. Just put down the guns, save a life," Carlton said.

As for what's next for the Adams family, "we're hopefully getting him laid to rest," Aliyah said. Then their focus will shift as they search for justice.

Greensboro Police wouldn't share any more details about the case. It's not clear whether they have a suspect in mind - or why the shooting happened in the first place.
