MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Cara Davis said her grandmother Bonnie Jean Smith Hennings was a strong independent woman, a true caregiver, and loving to all that knew her.
Hennings was airlifted to a hospital and died from her injuries a day later.
Davis said Hennings was a fighter to the very end.
Davis was holding her hand as she passed away.
Davis said Hennings was spending the day doing what she loved.
"Spending time with my grandfather, driving around the countryside, and shopping at country stores."
She said the two had stopped at the Walmart on Rockford Street, on their way back from visiting Cana, Virginia, so that Hennings could grab a few items for her husband.
As she was walking back, she was struck by a car.
"My family and I are heartbroken. My ma-maw, Bonnie, was an active, spirited, healthy, beautiful woman," Davis said.
Davis said Hennings was married to her grandfather for 68 years, they had 3 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
"Her legacy will live on within the hearts and minds of many in our family, friends, and the greater community. We appreciate love, prayers, good thoughts, and support during this difficult time," Davis said.
Davis said she is thankful to the first responders, medical professionals, and others who did their best to save her grandmother's life.
The loss Davis said is bittersweet.
"Though I am sad and will miss her very much, I know she is no longer in any pain and is with God. I look forward to the day that I get to see her and hear her beautiful voice again. Ma-maw, I love you. Forever and always," Davis said.
