Funeral services for fallen Lexington fire captain announced

LEXINGTON, N.C. — On March 29, a Lexington firefighter died. Now, he will be laid to rest.

Captain Ronnie Metcalf, 53, died from serious injuries after responding to a Lexington house fire.

After a few minutes of battling the fire, an order to evacuate the home was issued, according to the Lexington Fire Department. Fire crews evacuated the area and then realized that one firefighter was missing.

Teams reentered the building and found the missing firefighter, Metcalf. 

Metcalf was treated for burn injuries on the scene before being flown to a hospital, where he died a few days later, the fire department said.

Metcalf was a veteran firefighter, serving the community for 30 years. He had been with the Lexington Fire Department for 19 years. 

According to Metcalf's obituary, he will lie in state from 12-6 p.m. on Friday, April 5 at Hillside Park Baptist Church, located at 7593 E. Holly Grove Road in Thomasville for those who want to pay their respects. 

A funeral service for the public will be live-streamed at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church in Thomasville.

The burial will be private, the obituary said.
