When is the solar eclipse in the Triad?

It's Solar Eclipse Day! Here's what you need to know...

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Total Solar Eclipse is coming up soon and will cross parts of the United States. But what will we see here in North Carolina, and what time do you need to pay attention? The WFMY News 2 Weather Team has you covered.

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions in the Triad!

When is the eclipse?

The solar eclipse is on Monday, April 8. Here in NC, it begins just before 2 p.m. and peaks around 3:14 p.m. It will be over by 4:30 p.m.

Will we see the eclipse in North Carolina?

We will see a partial solar eclipse, with the sun more than 80% blocked by the moon. However, we will not see the total eclipse.

Do I need glasses to see it?

Absolutely yes. You cannot look at the sun without solar eclipse classes. It is very unsafe otherwise. Here in NC, you need the glasses the whole time because we will not experience total darkness.

Will it get dark?

It will not get dark here in NC. That is only for a total eclipse. They will experience that from Texas to Ohio in the line of totality.

Where can I travel to see the total eclipse?

You should travel to see the total solar eclipse if you can. There is nothing like it! It will pass through Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Vermont. Look up a map online.

How do I get solar eclipse glasses?

If you have any from last time, they will work. Otherwise, I'd order them now on Amazon or otherwise, just make sure they are approved. They are going fast.

What if I don't have glasses?

You can make a projector with a cardboard box by poking a hole. As you set this on the ground, view the dot of light projected, and it will have a crescent shape. You can also look underneath a tree at the rays of light between the leaves, and crescents will also be present.

If you want a fun place to watch it with good visibility, we will have a watch party at Triad Park in Kernersville at 3 p.m. on April 8! Our next solar eclipse won't happen until 2044!
