GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tropical Storm Debby is slowly moving through the Carolinas, and will track directly through the Triad today. We are concerned about torrential rain that will bring flash flooding across the area. You need to make sure you're avoiding flooding roadways and keep your devices charged in case of power outages.
DEBBY RAIN IN GREENSBORO AREA THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AM
Your WFMY News 2 Weather Team has issued two Weather Alert Impact Days for Thursday & Friday morning due to the increasing concern of flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.
WHAT WILL DEBBY'S IMPACT BE?
Rainfall amounts for our area will range from 3 inches to 6 inches throughout the day Thursday. This is an enormous amount of rain in a single day for us, and will cause plenty of problems.
A rare high flash flood risk has been issued for our area for the first time since the hurricanes of 2018. We need to expect and plan for flash flooding to happen throughout the day as the rains continue from morning to evening.
All of our Piedmont-Triad viewing area is under a Flood Warning until late tonight.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PREPARE:
With already-saturated soils from recent rainfall events, flooding is even more of a concern. If you haven't already, it is a good idea to clear your gutters or drains for the incoming rain. Remember, it only takes 6" of moving water to knock someone down, 24" can sweep cars.
Though flooding is our primary concern, winds could be gusty at times in the Triad between 35-45mph Thursday. Make sure you have secured loose outdoor objects. This is what wind gusts could look like Thursday morning. Power outages are possible.
With the 11 pm update, Debby will move through NC picking up some speed through Friday. While Thursday will be very tough, the weather will improve quickly on Friday. The weekend still looks nice and dry.
Debby is forecast to head northeast and out of the Piedmont-Triad by the weekend. Saturday and Sunday look to be great weather days in our area. The main idea: take this storm seriously. This storm is slow-moving and will cause issues for flooding all over the southeast, especially for the coast over the next several days. Conditions will improve for the weekend but expect possible lingering road closures, power outages, and flooding for some days.
