NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Gov. Roy Cooper was joined by Emergency Management officials at 11 a.m. Friday to share another update about Helene's impact on North Carolina.
Cooper said additional National Guard members have been activated to help with responding to the storm. Flooding is expected to continue over the weekend.
Cooper called Helene one of the "worst storms in modern history" for western North Carolina. He urged people in western North Carolina to not travel due to high amounts of flooding in the area.
There have been two deaths from the storm in North Carolina so far, according to Cooper; a 4-year-old died in a head-on crash in Catawba County Thursday and a person died in Charlotte when a tree fell on their home.
Numerous evacuations remain in place in areas where there is a potential for flooding.
Helene made landfall in Florida Thursday evening, and the western part of North Carolina is already feeling the effects of the storm. Many counties in the area are reporting power outages and the region is experiencing heavy flooding and rain.
Cooper held a briefing yesterday and urged North Carolina residents to prepare for the storm and keep a close watch on weather forecasts.
We will continue to keep you updated with the latest information about Helene.
