BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order No. 313 declaring a State of Emergency for four counties in southeastern NC that suffered damage from hazardous weather including flooding and heavy rainfall on Monday.
“This state of emergency declaration will help counties hit by severe rainfall and flooding to recover from this storm,” said Governor Cooper. “I urge North Carolinians across the state to remain cautious as many roads are still dangerous.”
The cause of the inclement weather Monday was the Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight storm that slammed the coasts of both Carolinas. The storm dropped over 18 inches of rain in some locations, including many popular vacation spots like Carolina Beach.
Brunswick County, which is home to Oak Island, Southport and Bald Head Island, among other municipalities, was among the hardest-hit areas. The county declared a local state of emergency and shelters have been opened at South Brunswick Middle and Bolivia Elementary, according to the Governor's office.
Carolina Beach and Kure Beach in New Hanover County have also declared states of emergency related to the severe weather.
WFMY News 2 compiled a list of roads that are still impacted by the storm. You can check it out here.
According to the Governor's office, 52 roads in 12 counties were closed, including portions of U.S. 17, N.C. 211 and N.C. 133 in Brunswick County.
