Triad residents come together to organize aid for Helene victims

Governor Roy Cooper said Monday 34 confirmed deaths have been attributed to the storm.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In the wake of Helene, several businesses and groups around the Triad have chipped in to organize aid for the victims in western North Carolina.

Traveling around the Triad on Monday, our WFMY News 2 crew came across a large box truck at the back of the Target on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro filled with supplies. The truck belonged to Buds & Blooms Nursery, a Browns Summit-based garned center.

The center told WFMY News 2's Hannah Jeffries that they usually make a trip to the western part of the state once a week. Now, they're planning to take more than just plants.

She also talked to a Fatima Laurel-Contreras, a local who donated items to be taken to western NC by Buds & Blooms. Laurel-Contreras told us this was her way of paying it forward.

"We have a saying that's like, 'Por te manana por me' and its like today I'll help you, then later one I'll receive help," she said. "So, it's kind of like good karma. So like today I'm helping you and then one day, if I ever need help, I will receive help as well.

Buds & Blooms said it would remain at the Target in Greensboro collecting items until 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

Another local business taking donations is Moonbird Soulful Living in Greensboro, a shop curated to health and wellness. The owner, Christian Brown, recently visited Asheville before Helene hit.

"I'm just thinking this morning, was thinking about this beautiful Asian pottery that I walked by and thought about her studio and how it's not there anymore, and all the hours and the love and the time that she's put into that work," Brown said. "So, more than just a financial repercussion it really does touch the heart. So, I feel really aware of all the artist in Asheville."

Moonbird Soulful Living is accepting donations at its location at 1938 Spring Garden Street.

The City of Greensboro announced Monday that GuilfordWorks career centers in Greensboro and High Point are accepting donated items for victims of the storm across western North Carolina.
