GREENSBORO, N.C. — A slow moving thunderstorm hit Greensboro late Friday night. It dropped 3 to 5 inches of rain across the western and northern sections of the city. On top of the rainfall that we saw from Tropical Storm Debby, life-threatening flooding happened quickly. It began to recede overnight and into early Saturday morning. A Flash Flood *Emergency* remained in effect until 5:45 AM.

Greensboro Police Department reported multiple water rescues throughout the city late Friday night. These happened as waters rose quickly. Some impacted areas included:

  • New Garden Rd near Battleground
  • Guilford College Rd at Wendover
  • Huffine Mill at Wendover
  • Woodstream Lane
  • Shelby Drive
  • Big Tree Way

At this time we do not know of any injuries from the flood emergency. Many roads across the city were flooded during this time and may remain flooded overnight.

The thunderstorms that caused the flooding were part of a cold from moving in from the west. This cold front slowed to a halt, creating a few surprise thunderstorms that put down a lot of water very quickly. For the rest of the night this front will crawl south and east across the area. A few more downpours are possible.

Areas of 3 to 5 inches of rain fell in just about 2-3 hours on Friday night. This is on top of the rainfall that fell from Tropical Storm Debby over the course of a whole day. It's no wonder the flooding that happened was fast and furious.
