CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A medical director shared new insight about a Carolina Panther player's alarming injury.
Tight end Hayden Hurst has post-traumatic amnesia.
He said he couldn't remember anything in a 4-hour window after suffering a concussion.
It will take time for Hayden to get back on the field, but that's the goal and expectation here.
Clearly a scary situation.
A medical director with Wake Forest Athletics said there's not a clear road forward.
"He may never have full memory of that short period of time after that concussion. Those memories may not come back," Dr. Chris Miles, sports medicine specialist at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, said.
He said all concussions are different, and only about 10% of concussions end up causing this kind of memory loss.
Amnesia isn't always associated with a severe concussion. He said that as long as the other symptoms go away, it is safe for Hayden to take the field again this season.
"We do feel it's safe to return. We generally do clear people to return within the same season," Dr. Miles continued.
Hayden posted an update on social media on Thursday, Dec. 7.
He said he is starting his return play protocol this week and hopes to return before the end of the year. He hasn't played in nearly a month.
As for the team, it's getting for the Saints this weekend.
