NC auto racing companies donate $2 million to Hurricane Helene Relief

The combined donation has been made to Samaritan's Purse.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four of the top auto racing companies in North Carolina have combined to pledge $2 million to Samaritan's Purse in support of Hurricane Helene relief efforts in western North Carolina and across the southeast, according to a press release from Hendrick Automotive Group.

Hendrick Automotive Group, Hendrick Motorsports, Sonic Automotive and Speedway Motorsports combined for the donation, which is going to the Boone-based organization. Samaritan's Purse is not only coordinating relief efforts in North Carolina, but also in several other states impacted by the storm.

The CEO of Hendrick Automotive Group and Henrick Motorsports is Rick Hendrick, a legendary team owner and NASCAR Hall of Fame member. His team has won a combined 14 NASCAR Cup Series Championships.

David B. Smith is the CEO of Sonic Automotive and Marcus Smith is CEO of Speedway Motorsports. Both men are the son of Bruton Smith, the founder of Speedway Motorsports and NASCAR Hall of Fame member who died in 2022.

“The impact of Hurricane Helene has been catastrophic,” said the chief executives in a joint statement. “Our organizations represent more than 22,000 team members across the country, with thousands based here in the Southeast and many with connections that make this cause profoundly personal. Our neighbors in hard-hit areas face immense challenges in rebuilding their homes, communities and lives, and we will stand alongside them.

“Our companies share a commitment to community involvement and deep roots in western North Carolina and the Southeast region, and we feel a moral obligation to provide support and encourage others to engage in this effort through giving or volunteering. Samaritan’s Purse has an incredible track record of helping people all over the world, and we are proud to support the important work they’re doing right here in our backyard.”

Donations are still being accepted at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Wednesdays between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Hendrick Automotive and Hendrick Motorsports will host a donation drive Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its Fall Fest fan event in Concord.
