College Football: Week 2 final scores and game recaps for NC teams

NC A&T secured a win against WSSU in overtime, while North Carolina won its first home game.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Several college football teams from North Carolina went head-to-head in games Saturday afternoon and evening.

NC A&T secured a win against WSSU in overtime, while North Carolina won in its first home game. The Guilford College Quakers also took down the Greensboro College Pride in a matchup between two teams from Gate City.

Here's a recap of final scores and key moments from Saturday's games.

North Carolina 38, Charlotte 20

The Tar Heels went up against Charlotte in their home opener of the season Saturday afternoon. 

Charlotte kicker Kyle Cunanan scored two field goals in the first two quarters of the game, and UNC quarterback Conner Harrell led his team to score three touchdowns. At halftime, the Tar Heels led 21-6 in the game against Charlotte.

During the third quarter, Harrell had a 58-yard pass to Christian Hamilton, who scored his first career touchdown, on a trick play.

UNC went on to secure a 38-20 win over Charlotte.

East Carolina 20, Old Dominion 14

The Pirates had a close game against Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia, ultimately coming away with a 20-14 win.

Both ECU and Old Dominion managed to score touchdowns during the first two quarters. The two teams remained neck-and-neck with Old Dominion leading 7-6 at halftime.

ECU dominated the third quarter, scoring another touchdown and a field goal. ECU quarterback Jake Garcia had 283 passing yards throughout the game while Old Dominion managed only 192 passing yards.

ECU kicker Andrew Conrad closed out the scoring with a fourth quarter field goal to put the final margin at six points.

Elon 41, NC Central 19

Elon traveled back to Durham to play against NC Central in an away game after losing to Duke on the road in Week 1.

The Phoenix had a balanced offensive attack led by running back T.J. Thomas Jr., who ran for 152 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. Quarterback Matthew Downing was 19-of-28 for 237 yards and one touchdown against one interception.

Elon's defense picked off NC Central quarterback Walker Harris three times.

Virginia 31, Wake Forest 30

Wake Forest couldn't come away with a victory at home Saturday against ACC foe Virginia.

Wake Forest running back Demond Claiborne had two rushing touchdowns in the first half, but the Demon Deacons led by just three points, 20-17, at halftime.

The Deacs extended their lead in the second half, but a furious comeback from the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter set up some late-game fireworks. 

Virginia scored the final points of the game with 2:07 remaining on a 1-yard run by Grady Brosterhous, coming away with a 31-30 win. This was Virginia's first win over Wake Forest since the 2007 season.

NC A&T 27, Winston-Salem State 20

NC A&T and Winston-Salem State had a much-anticipated matchup on the football field Saturday night.

After falling behind 20-17 late in Saturday's game, NC A&T place kicker Andrew Brown tied the game at 20-20 with a field goal as time expired.

In overtime, NC A&T running back Wesley Graves had a 16-yard run to score the game's final touchdown. The Aggies' defense then held the Rams' offense to lock up the win.

Tennessee 51, NC State 10

A top-25 matchup at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday ended in a blowout, with the No. 14 Volunteers taking down the No. 25 Wolfpack, 51-10.

During the game's first two quarters, Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava led his team to two touchdowns. By halftime, the Volunteers had a 20-3 lead over the Wolfpack.

Corner Aydan White scored N.C. State's only touchdown on an 87-yard pick-six at the tail end of the third quarter, but it only cut the lead to 37-10.

N.C. State quarterback Grayson McCall finished the game 15-of-22 for 104 yards and one interception. The Wolfpack only managed 143 yards of total offense as a team.

Clemson 66, Appalachian State 20

Clemson destroyed Appalachian State on Saturday thanks to a huge game from quarterback Cade Klubnik.

Klubnik only played in the first half but finished the night with 378 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and two additional rushing touchdowns.

Clemson scored five touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 35-0 lead over the Mountaineers. During the second quarter, App State managed to score one touchdown and two field goals, but Clemson still led 56-13 at halftime.

The Tigers finished Saturday night with 712 yards of total offense, the sixth-most they've gained in a game in school history. It was also Clemson's ninth game with at least 60 points under Dabo Swinney.

Guilford College 14, Greensboro College 0

The Greensboro College Pride took on the Guilford College Quakers in a matchup between two teams from Gate City.

Burlington Williams alumnus Jaelen Brown found running back Malik Woodard during the first quarter for a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.

Greensboro College had a strong defense throughout the game, but it was not enough to upend the Quakers, who had another touchdown during the final quarter of the game.

Guilford College won the game 14-0.
