My 2 Cents: Mother Nature has cruel way of putting life in perspective

I saw my son’s shoes, muddy from playing in rain, and thought how lucky we were to have laundry to wash. Just down the road, families lost everything in an instant.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for my "2 cents."

Mother Nature has a cruel way of putting life into perspective.

A few days ago, I was getting my son ready for school...and noticed his shoes. They were coated in mud from paying in our yard, still damp from (Hurricane) Helene's heavy rain.

He told me we needed to wash them. I agreed...and then it hit me.

How lucky are we...to have laundry to wash? The same rain that brought the joy-filled puddle stomping that caused those dirty shoes was the source of utter devastation, just two hours down the road.

How lucky are we...to clean up fallen limbs in our yard, when just two hours down the road, families like ours lost someone they loved and everything they owned in an instant?

How lucky are we...to go home on a Friday after work and hug our children, when just two hours down the road emergency responders have pulled days-long shifts saving lives, airlifting supplies and clearing roads?

When Mother Nature is merciless, she reminds us so quickly not to discount daily blessings. We must not let our fast-paced world "muddy" our perspective of what really matters.

Let's continue to put ourselves in others' shoes...and take meaningful steps to help.

Sincerely,

Meghann
