NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The North Carolina Department of Transportation is still warning that there are dangerous conditions in western North Carolina.

Roads throughout the mountains remain closed or have limited access. There are shortages of water, food, gas, power, and communications, according to the NCDOT.

The Asheville Police Department issued the following statement about traveling into western North Carolina: "As the weekend approaches, we recognize that many friends and family members are traveling to support their loved ones affected by Tropical Storm Helene. While family is incredibly important, we kindly ask that if you don’t need to travel, please stay off the roads. Keeping the roads clear will help first responders, cleanup crews, and power restoration efforts do their vital work. If you have concerns about a missing person, we encourage you to use the missing person form available on our website."

Residents and travelers from North Carolina are not able to reach Tennessee by I-40 or I-26.

Ashe, Henderson, and Watauga make up some of the counties that are reporting the most road closures in North Carolina from Helene.

We have made an updated list of road closures related to Helene in North Carolina.

NCDOT said the amount of road closures is fluctuating as crews continue to clear roads and highways of debris.
