Early dismissal for Thomasville City Schools on Solar Eclipse Day

North Carolina will see a partial eclipse at 80%. One school district in the Triad will be dismissing students early so kids can safely see it.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A total solar eclipse will pass over America on Monday, April 8. While the Triad is not in the path of totality, we will still see a partial eclipse at 80%.

The timing of the eclipse has one Triad school district changing up its plans. Thomasville City Schools will dismiss students early on Monday. It has to do with the timing of the eclipse for our area and bus routes. The district said it wants to make sure all students get home safely before the peak coverage happens in our area (which will be around 3:14 p.m. ET). Here's a look at when schools will dismiss:

Monday, April 8 early dismissals:

  • Thomasville Primary and Liberty Drive -- Dismissing at noon
  • Thomasville Middle and High Schools -- Dismissing at 12:45 p.m.

Here's the full message from the school district:

"Important school schedule change for Monday, April 8, 2024! Out of abundance of caution, on Monday, April 8th our students will be on an early dismissal schedule due to the timing of the solar eclipse. As is forecast, we are in the path of 80% max coverage to occur in our area at 3:13pm. This of course is when our buses will be on the road, so in an effort to ensure everyone arrives home safely before the eclipse phases begin, we will operate on our early dismissal schedule. Thomasville Primary and Liberty Drive will dismiss at noon and Thomasville Middle and High Schools will dismiss at 12:45."
