Voting & the photo ID requirement

Common questions answered: What happens if I forget my ID, How do officials check to make sure an absentee voter is a real person?

GREENSBORO, N.C. — There are a lot of questions about the photo ID requirement for voting in NC.

What if I forget my ID when I go to vote?

If I'm voting absentee and can't make a photocopy of my ID, then what?

Can I still vote if my photo ID is expired?

If someone doesn't show a photo ID, then how do election officials check to make sure the voter is allowed to vote?

The North Carolina Board of Elections info video explains what happens if a voter doesn't produce a photo ID and doesn't satisfy any of the exclusions.

All voters will be allowed to vote with or without a photo ID. If the voter does not show an acceptable ID, the voter may vote with an ID Exception Form and a provisional ballot, or vote with a provisional ballot and return to their county board of elections office with their photo ID by the day before county canvass. (For municipal elections in September and October, this deadline is the Monday following Election Day. For all other elections, the deadline is the second Thursday following Election Day.)

When it comes to the absentee voter, a photocopy of the ID is required. But there are exceptions....

"If they check the box for not having the ability to photocopy their ID, they then in lieu of that, have to give us the last four digits of their Social Security number or a Driver's license number," said Tim Tsujii, Forsyth County Board of Elections Director.

You can still vote if your photo ID is expired as long as the ID has only been expired for one year or less. Here's something else to note, if your driver's license expired by your 65th birthday or later, you can use it as an ID.
