The text is not from the NC State Board of Elections, but the link takes you to the state website for Early Voting locations.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Political texts are a given this time of year, but the text going around this week has people upset. It reads:

A voter at (insert your address here) may not have voted. Vote here: (link provided)

2 Wants To Know has received several calls and emails about this text message.  People have asked questions: Is it a scam? How do they know if I voted? How did they get my address? What is the state doing about it?

The North Carolina State Board of Elections did not send out this text message.  The Executive Director said in a statement:

While we know these communications may be annoying or confusing, the purpose of most of them is to encourage voters to exercise the right to vote.

Getting you to vote is what this text is about. The link takes you to the NCSBOE Early Voting sites search page. The hope is that you put in your county and figure out where you can go and vote early.

This text message is legal. It uses public information from voting records to get your address.

This message does not take you to a site to vote online. This message doesn't come from a source that knows whether you voted or not.. Early votes aren't tabulated until Election Day.

So, what should you do about this text? Report it as junk and forget about it.
