GREENSBORO, N.C. — Election Day has come and gone, the races have been called, and yet the results are unofficial until Friday, November 15, 2024.
What's happening in these 10 days? It's called Canvass and it happens after every election. According to the NC State Board of Elections website:
Canvass is the official process of determining whether the votes have been counted and tabulated correctly, resulting in the authentication of the official election results.
For close elections, the canvass period is especially important. During this time, elections officials count absentee ballots that came in before the deadline and research provisional ballots to determine whether they should be counted.
In every county, the canvass meeting when the results are certified is 10 days after Election Day.
Canvass is the official process of determining whether the votes have been counted and tabulated correctly.
There are five different types of audits they do in those 10 days: voter history, data, provisional ballot, sample, and close contest. Click here to read an explanation of each.
Day In and day out, these audits are being done until the 10th day.
"The day of Canvass, we do the final aggregation of the results, if there are any irregularities we need to deal with, the board will sign the official documentation to certify the election," said Charlie Collicutt, Guilford County Board of Elections Director.
While the campaign ads are over, the campaign stops are done, the election process keeps going and you'll be hearing about it until November 15th.
