What to know about the 2024 North Carolina Primary:
1. North Carolina primaries are partisan - meaning registered Republicans and Democrats vote for candidates within their parties. Non-affiliated voters must choose a Republican, Democrat, or Libertarian ballot on Super Tuesday.
2. Primaries allocate how many delegates a candidate receives heading into the convention. States and parties have different methods for allocating delegates. Democrats use proportional delegation (based on vote percentage), so even a second-place finisher, for example, will go to the convention with delegates. Republicans use three methods that vary by state - proportional, winner-take-all, and hybrid. North Carolina is a proportional state.
3. In North Carolina, if no candidate gets 30% +1 vote in any race, there could be a second primary on May 14, if the second-place finisher requests a runoff. This will be important to watch in races with multiple candidates, like the Lt. Governor's Republican race and NC's 6th District.
4. No results are official on election night, even if media projects winners. Votes go to a canvass and are certified 10 days after the election (March 15).
