Ryan Routh's legal team files motion to delay trial, citing volume of evidence to review

Routh's legal team is requesting the trial be moved almost a full year.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The man accused of attempting to assassinate President-Elect Donald Trump is requesting to delay the trial by nearly a full year, according to court documents acquired by WFMY News 2.

Ryan Routh is set to face trial for the alleged assassination attempt on Feb. 10, 2025, where he faces life in prison. Investigators said he plotted to kill Trump and staked out Mar-a-Lago with a rifle on Sept. 24.

Court documents said his legal team has acquired an "extraordinary volume" of discovery (the process by which trial parties exchange information), most of which only became available as recently as Dec. 7.

Routh's legal team wrote they would have an insufficient amount of time to review the discovery by the original Feb. 10 date and claimed that proceeding with that date would result in a miscarriage of justice.

The motion suggested for the trial to be moved to December 2025, nearly a full year later.

"The discovery received by the defense to date is voluminous and rivals that of the largest cases handled in this District," wrote the defense.

The discovery includes digital evidence like over 240 GB of data downloaded from 18 phones, five phone company records, over 320 GB of data downloaded from three computers, over 47 GB of data from three tablets, over 13 GB of data from storage discs, and 3,000 photos.

There are also analyses from several different crime examiners and lab reports, drone footage, financial and retail records, travel records, electronic storage platforms, social media platforms, and an unknown amount of jail calls/communications.

The defense said it is waiting to receive a "substantial quantity" of bodycam footage and private business surveillance footage. Routh's legal team claims even more discovery is expected to be received on top of this.

Earlier this year, Routh's team filed a motion for the judge overseeing his case to recuse herself over alleged Trump ties. This request was denied.
