WEST PALM BEACH, Fla — The judge overseeing Former President Donald Trump's attempted assassination case will not step down.
The legal team for alleged Donald Trump attempted assassin Ryan Routh filed a motion on Oct. 18 to have the judge overseeing his case recuse herself because of some connections she has to the former President.
The judge denied Routh's request to recuse herself, according to court documents.
In his request, Routh questioned her impartiality.
According to court documents, Judge Aileen Cannon was originally appointed by Trump and was also the judge who dismissed the classified documents case against the former President. The document also claims Trump has mentioned Cannon by name several times on the campaign trail ahead of the 2024 general election.
The judge said that neither of those factors would impact her ability to avoid bias.
She said she has no control over what anyone says about her or her rulings.
Routh faces life in prison after investigators say he plotted to kill Trump and staked out Mar-a-Lago with a rifle.
In late September, Routh pleaded not guilty to five charges, including one for the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate.
