WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The legal team for alleged Donald Trump attempted assassin Ryan Routh filed a motion Thursday to have the judge overseeing his case recuse herself because of some connections she has to the former President.
According to court documents, Judge Aileen Cannon was originally appointed by Trump and was also the judge who dismissed the classified documents case against the former President. The document also claims Trump has mentioned Cannon by name several times on the campaign trail ahead of the 2024 general election.
Routh's legal team worries Cannon's previous connections to Trump could jeopardize her impartiality in the case.
In late September, Routh pleaded not guilty to five charges, including one for the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. If convicted, he would face a sentence of life in prison.
Investigators say Routh brought a rifle to Trump's golf resort in West Palm Beach last month after staking out the site for several hours. In the wake of the incident, WFMY News 2 found that Routh had several ties to the Greensboro area and had multiple run-ins with the Greensboro Police Department.
