Kia and Hyundai owners take advantage of free steering wheel lock giveaway

Police saw a rise in car thefts targeting mostly Kia and Hyundai owners. The steering wheel lock serves as an added layer of protection.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Update: Winston-Salem police said as of 11 a.m., they gave away all available steering wheel locks. They do not have an update on when their next wheel lock shipment will be delivered and have not set a date for their next giveaway.

The Winston-Salem Police Department gave away free steering wheel locks to drivers Wednesday morning, despite having a shipping mishap.

Winston-Salem Police were set to give away double the amount in the last giveaway. However, only half of the 240 free steering wheel locks in Winston-Salem went out to drivers.

"Last time, we got done in about 20 minutes with our first one. We had about 120 to 130 steering wheel locks last time. We doubled our order, and we realized at the last minute that we had not gotten our complete shipment, so we had to kind of adjust a little bit. We didn't have as many backed up and finished as we did last time, but we still had a great turnout," said Sgt. Ryan Hagan.

Earlier this year, a trend went viral on TikTok showing people a flaw in the security systems of Hyundais and Kias allowing them to be stolen in a matter of minutes, sometimes, even seconds.

Winston-Salem Police said it has been a growing problem across the city and the locks are the easiest way to protect your property.

Police said the giveaway is designed to stem thefts of specifically Hyundais and Kias.

If you didn't get a wheel lock, there is a system upgrade being offered for free from Hyundai and Kia. You just need to call your local dealership.

As for the rest of the wheel locks still being shipped, we'll keep you updated on what police decide to do with them.
