Winston-Salem police to give away more steering wheel locks following social media trend

Winston-Salem police will give away another 240 steering wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai owners on Oct. 18.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police know about the TikTok trend showing people how to steal certain cars.

So, they want to give out more tools for drivers to fight back.

On Oct. 18, the Winston-Salem Police Department will give away another 240 steering wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai owners.

The videos online show people how to start cars by taking advantage of a glitch.

Police said both Kias and Hyundais have been stolen locally and they want to help.

Be prepared —these are expected to go quickly.

120 were already given out last month.

“The goal is to try to get the locks out to those who may not already have the security system placed on their cars. So, that we can protect our citizens as well as their possessions, approximately 240 of our wheel locks will be given out in this program. So, again it’s going to be first come first serve. I believe the last time we did it we were out in about 15 min. So, we're asking all our citizens to please come out. We will try to get you in and out as quickly as possible so that you can protect our possessions.” Winston-Salem police officer.

The giveaway will be on Oct. 18 starting at 7 a.m. at the Winston Mutual building.

People who own these cars can also go to a Hyundai or Kia dealership to get the new security system put in —which is free.
