Here's why the Interactive Resource Center scaled back its operations and what's next

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Interactive Resource Center (IRC), a Greensboro nonprofit supporting people experiencing homelessness, has officially reduced its hours as of Friday, now closing daily at 3 p.m. This shift ends its 24/7 operations, which began in January, after a surge in 911 calls and a recent incident where a man was shot and killed outside the facility.

The IRC’s Executive Director, Kristina Singleton, explained that the center was not designed as a full-time shelter. “Our community needs a much different answer than a 24/7 drop-in center,” Singleton said. “It was originally made for people that were in a crisis in that moment and not meant to be long term. It’s not necessarily dignified to be sleeping at a table and a chair.”

City Manager Trey Davis stated that while the city was prepared to continue funding overnight services, it sought additional safety measures. “We need assurance that if we're dedicating dollars or funds to that location, that there is going to be safety for people coming in to seek resources,” said Davis.

With the contract now ended, Davis noted that the city is looking at partnerships with other local organizations, including faith-based groups, to support the needs of Greensboro’s homeless population.

The IRC will continue offering essential services such as showers, phone access, and laundry during daytime hours. The city remains open to exploring additional projects with the IRC to further aid community members in need.
