GREENSBORO, N.C. — A man is dead after a shooting outside of the Interactive Resource Center Wednesday morning, Greensboro police said.

Officers identified the victim as 25-year-old Austin Schneider.

He and the suspect had an interaction before the shooting in the parking lot of the IRC around 3:19 a.m., police say.

The IRC released a statement following the shooting Wednesday:

"Last night, a guest of the IRC died tragically due to gun violence at approximately 3:19 a.m. in the IRC parking lot due to what we believe was an altercation between individuals who knew one another. The victim was a guest of the IRC. The other was not.

This is the first time in IRC's fifteen-year history that such an incident has occurred.

Today is a challenging moment for our staff and guests. The individual had received services for some time and was known to many of us. Our hearts go out to the family of the victim and the witnesses."

This investigation is ongoing.

We reached out to Greensboro City Council members for comment.

"This is another step that the IRC. You know they didn't want safety precautions, they didn't want metal detectors and they didn't want to do quite frankly what the city was asking them to do and now its resulted in a man losing his life," said Zack Matheny.

Mayor Nancy Vaughn also released a statement regarding the shooting:

"I was saddened to hear about the loss of life on the IRC property early this morning.  I am glad that the exterior cameras, that we strongly advocated for, were installed. Unfortunately, that didn’t prevent this tragedy, but it will help us find the perpetrator. We’ve held other establishments accountable for actions on their property and the IRC should be held to the same standard.  Public safety must be a priority."
