Weather Impact: Drought improves across NC

The Triad received over 6 inches of rain in the last two weeks of July

GREENSBORO, N.C. —

Strange Weather Pattern So Far

From the start of 2024, we've had either above-normal rainfall or have been extremely parched every month. This includes the most recent month of July, where the Triad netted over 9.5" of rain. WOW! To give you an idea of how much that is, the average rainfall in Greensboro for the month of July is around 4.54". We received over double that. On the other hand, other months have struggled to receive any rain at all.

After not receiving much rainfall for all of June & the first half of July, Thursday July 18th showed a worsened Drought Map across our area including Extreme Drought (D3) for portions of Yadkin county. Fortunately, a wetter pattern set up across the southeast for the second half of July and brought much-needed rainfall across NC.

The Latest Drought Map: August 1

Another week with heavy rain across NC has brought improvements to the latest Drought Map: areas of Moderate & Severe Drought have lessened. Over half of NC (55%) has received enough rainfall in recent weeks to be eliminated from any drought designation.

More rain is likely in next few days; a cold front will approach and stall to our northwest bringing an unsettled weather pattern for the weekend. Rain chances will be more sparse into early next week.
