GREENSBORO, N.C. — "Are we going to get any rain?" is a question we've heard time and time again here recently. It's been a tough go for lots of folks in our area. In this weather pattern we've been in, there have been few winners and many losers in the pop-up storm game. June was incredibly dry, and even with a fair amount of rain in July so far, it's hard to correct our ongoing drought with no widespread rain for the Piedmont, especially in these hot days we've been having.
Our latest drought numbers came out this morning and as expected, our drought has gotten worse in our area. More of our Triad area is now in a level 2 (moderate) drought. Even worse than that for some of our area, just to the west.
Finally though, we may actually start to put a dent in our drought as we head into the weekend and into early next week. The problem though, is figuring out who and where will get the rain each day. We'll have a chance for pop up downpours and storms each day as we head into the weekend and into early next week. It won't rain everyday for everybody, but these are better chances and consistent chances, which is a change from our recent weather pattern.
Storms that pop up over the next few days could have really heavy rain, and while that may sound great for our drought, it can actually help less than you may think. Heavy, flooding rain washes away quickly without time to absorb into our ground before running off.
Around 1-2" of rain is possible for the Piedmont over the next week, even more if we're lucky. Some locally lower or higher totals are possible.
