GREENSBORO, N.C. — We're learning more about a deadly fire on Glenside Drive in Greensboro. Two children died. The mother of one of the children was critically injured.
Delton Whitaker, a man who says he is the father of 3-year-old Cash Whitaker who, died in the fire told us the other child who died was Cash's close friend.
Cash's mother was taken to Moses Cone Hospital and then airlifted to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. The family told WFMY News 2's Amber Lake she was pregnant and had to deliver her baby two months early.
The fire happened Thursday afternoon and 911 callers reported heavy smoke coming from the home.
"They're trying to bust the windows out," a 911 caller said. "Oh, my God. It's a lot of smoke. There are flames coming out of the side of the house," the caller continued.
Fire crews showed up less than six minutes after the call and got the smoke and flames out.
Neighbors are still trying to wrap their heads around what happened.
"I couldn’t sleep last night because we kept following the news to try to find out what happened and we were like, please be OK, please be OK, and we read the news and we were devastated,” said a neighbor who lives across the street.
Fire officials and a crime scene unit were on scene Friday, going in and out of the home as well as the shed on the property.
The fire is still under investigation. There's no word on what started it.
The Whitaker family released a statement regarding their loss:
"Our little man, Cash Money Whitaker will be missed by many. Our hearts are broken without you, boss baby. One love. This is from all families that loved him."
