SUMMERFIELD, N.C. — Resignations within Summerfield's government are now impacting town services.
Town Manager Scott Whitaker put a sign up on Town Hall Monday, alerting people that all planning services are now suspended. He said the only two workers in the planning department left on May 30 and May 31.
The planning department handles things such as permits and town codes. Without a planning staff, permits cannot be processed.
The entire town staff recently resigned, citing perceived mistreatment of Whitaker. Town Council decided not to offer Whitaker a new contract. It later voted to give him a severance package, including health coverage for six months.
The Parks and Recreation department is also seeing changes. Whitaker said the council asked to turn over some of the department's duties to volunteers. That means things like park maintenance now fall on the volunteers.
Whitaker and Mayor Tim Sessoms both said the town is working to hire an outside firm to hire temporary workers. They hope to have the workers in the building by next week.
Only two members of the town staff are scheduled to work through June 10, according to Whitaker. Everyone else has left.
Whitaker said someone from Guilford County leadership visited the town last week to discuss the staffing concerns. He said he shared his plan to get help on an interim basis.
