Update: Spectrum said as of Thursday morning, services have been restored across the Piedmont Triad. Here's what we know about the outage.
Spectrum users in the Triad have reported a widespread outage of their internet services. Representatives said the issue is affecting cities across North Carolina.
Spectrum said the outage was caused by a third-party damaging their fiber. The representative couldn't specify what exactly happened or when it will, approximately, be resolved.
Small businesses in Greensboro felt the impact of the outage.
Some lost customers because they could only accept cash - others were unable to see online orders.
The problems grew from there.
John Galvez works at Common Grounds Coffee in downtown Greensboro. He had to break the news to customers that they were impacted by the spectrum outage.
"You got people walking in with their laptops and tablets like do you have wifi I was on a Zoom call like 30 minutes ago and I need to get back on I'm still clocked in on my job," Galvez explained.
After so many guests walked In hoping for working wifi the coffee shop put a sign on the door letting folks know about the Spectrum outage.
"We kept telling them we didn't know what going on ," Galvez said. "We rely too much on technology to where when moments like this happens it affects a larger audience and even small businesses like us."
Spectrum released this statement in reference to the outage:
A third-party damaged our fiber. Our technical teams worked to restore services as quickly as possible for those impacted customers across the Triad. Services began being restored at approximately 9:15 p.m. We apologize for the service interruption.
WFMY News 2 received a tip from a viewer who said the outage began around 4 p.m. on July 31.
Penelope Brown with Savor the Moment the Bakery in Greensboro said its systems went out around 2 Wednesday afternoon.
"We had a bunch of door dash orders we didn't know we had," Brown said. "We had no word of the order so we had to make it really fast and that was challenging. It was a lot of people today. it was a lot but we went with it. "
Penelope Brown said they had to rely on their backup wifi through the city to take payments.
"We're on it but it's not really strong so it goes in and out," Brown said.
Although unexpected and a bit challenging both businesses said customers were understanding.
Meteorologist Tim Buckley reached out to viewers via Facebook to see how far-reaching the outage is.
Some viewers said they're without cable and internet while some said they're experiencing outages for one or the other.
Spectrum Enterprise's auto message said "We are currently experiencing a service interruption in the North Carolina area. Our technicians are working to restore service and it is not necessary to report this problem." We're working to find out more from the company.
