Man injured after hit by Winston-Salem police car

Winston-Salem police said they were driving down the road at 2:00 a.m. when they struck a person wearing dark clothing.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — NC State Highway Patrol said a Winston-Salem police patrol car hit a man walking in the roadway early Wednesday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. Troopers said the officer hit the man while approaching the I-40 west ramp off of US-52 South.

Winston-Salem police said the officer wasn't sure what their patrol car hit but stopped to check for damage. Police said another officer responded to the scene and that's when they noticed a man lying in the roadway. Police said the officer didn't see the man because he was wearing dark clothing.

Police said officers performed life-saving measures until EMS got there. Troopers said EMS took the man, identified as 39-year-old Sherman Pennix of Kernersville, to Baptist Hospital, where he is in serious condition.

Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
