3 hospitalized after becoming 'violently ill' at Winston-Salem bar | What we know

In a 911 call, a Burke Street Pub employee is heard saying a beer line possibly had a poisonous cleaner in it.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — WFMY News 2 is working to learn more about an unusual situation at a Winston-Salem bar.

Forsyth County EMS confirmed Friday that three people went to the hospital from Burke Street Pub on November 9 after getting sick. EMS said one person's condition is stable but officials did not have an update on the other two.

It's not clear what happened, but a bar employee shared their theory during a 911 call.

“We believe that the beer cleaners – the beer line cleaners – left a poisonous cleaner in one of the lines. I have three customers that have ingested it. Two are already on the way to the hospital – one is still here, violently ill," the caller said. "Please send an ambulance."

The caller explained more and said the customers who got sick all had the same beer.

“On Tuesdays, a contracted company comes in here to clean our beer lines, and I think they left the cleaner in one of the beer lines because all three of these people drank the exact same beer and immediately began vomiting. They said it was burning their throats, burning their mouths," the caller said.

There are no other reports that confirm how the patrons got sick. Forsyth County EMS didn't have further information to share, and Winston-Salem police said they are not involved because this is not a criminal investigation.

WFMY News 2 has reached out to the distributor of the Burke Street Pub for more information. We are working to confirm more details.
