Shots fired on Burke Street in Winston-Salem, community members 'scared to go outside'

Winston-Salem police said they received a call about a man firing shots at Gatsby's Pub on Burke Street overnight Monday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police responded to Gatsby's Pub on Burke Street to investigate a reported shooting and call for service overnight.

The call came in just after midnight on Monday.

When officers arrived, they reached out to the business personnel who reported the incident.

Investigation revealed an unidentified man dressed in a black hooded Wake Forest University sweatshirt, blue jeans, and multi-color Air Jordan sneakers became involved in an argument with several bar patrons while standing in front of the business.

The argument escalated and shots were fired. There have been no reported injuries at this time.

Businesses along Burke Street and people who frequent the area said they are sick of the continued violence.

"The streets are filled," local business employee, Savannah Carden said. "People are speeding by, there are mega groups of people just piling through. You will already hear people yelling at each other, and getting into fights. You get approached by people, I've had a man follow me up the street and threaten me before."

Kenneth Williamson said he's lived in Winston-Salem his entire life and is upset by what he calls an increase in crime.

"It's heartbreaking," Williamson said. "It's past frustrating. It's heartbreaking to see that tragedy happen to somebody when it could've been prevented."

This investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Forsyth County Sheriff, Bobby Kimbrough increased the presence of law enforcement across the city during the summer months.

Because of this, the sheriff said crime went down.

He said local law enforcement is working to continue this, but it'll take the entire community to make a change.

"So there are a lot of conversations that are being had as to how to increase and how to make and layer our city to make them safer," Sheriff Kimbrough said.
