GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hundreds of people are expected to attend a Memorial Ride Sunday for Sergeant Dale Nix. The effort is hosted by a national non-profit, Operation Fly Our Flag.
President of the nonprofit, Nathan Sheppard, told WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman that the ride will start from the Greensboro Coliseum all the way to Battleground Avenue, all to achieve one goal, honoring the life of Sgt. Nix.
Sheppard says hosting memorial rides never gets easier, especially when it's for a first responder, "it's very unfortunate, extremely unfortunate that these events happen."
He started the nonprofit back in 2019 due to his close connection to several first responders in his life. Although he didn't know Sgt. Nix personally, said it was only right to do something in honor of him.
"The more I learned about who Dale Nix was over those next couple of days, it really, really just kind of concreted that we needed to do something," Sheppard said.
One Gibsonville resident, Lisa Carmon said she plans on attending Sunday's Memorial Ride because, "he was a hero, he stepped up when he didn't have to and gave his life to save others. He deserves to be honored for the man he was."
Sheppard said seeing people from all over the state and beyond honoring Sgt. Nix in this way is a testament to who he was as a person.
"At least we can say, 'we support you,' whether it's to his family and or to the department," Sheppard said.
Along with Sunday's Memorial Ride, Sheppard tells WFMY News 2 the nonprofit is also selling memorial stickers to honor Sgt. Nix. All proceeds will go to the Nix family.
