NC State University campus building could be linked to potential cancer clusters

Investigators said Poe Hall could be linked to campus clusters but have not directly tied the illness to the building.

RALEIGH, N.C. — An NC State University campus building is now tied to potential cancer clusters, according to CBS affiliate WNCN.

Poe Hall shut down last November after inspectors detected cancer-causing chemicals.

Now, a group of people who regularly spent time in the building said they have cancer, including graduate student Dr. Darren Masier. Dr. Masier said he spent hours in Poe Hall from 2009 to 2013.

Investigators haven't directly tied the illness to the building.

Inspectors released a new report on Monday stating the chemicals came from a type of insulation sealant used in HVAC ducts.

The school said it now better understands issues in the building and how to move forward.

It will work with the EPA to map out those plans.

It's not clear when and if the building could reopen.
