Family grieving tragic deadly shooting that left 20-year-old dead

The family of a slain A&T student is pleading with the community for answers in his shooting death.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A family is grieving the heartbreaking death of an A&T student who was shot and killed on Aug. 22.

Greensboro police found the 20-year-old's body at the Campus Crossing Apartments on Spring Garden Street.

“He always had a smile on his face. He was one of those who didn't see the glass half empty. He always saw it half full,” said Karisha Boney, who lost her son in the shooting last week. Now, she’s pushing for answers.

A&T student Davion Jessup was shot and killed on Spring Garden Street last Thursday. Police have not yet made an arrest in the case.

Jessup’s mother said he lit up every room he was in and treated everyone—even strangers—like family. But last Thursday, his life was tragically cut short.

Boney said her son was shot and killed outside of his apartment building. Greensboro police found his body at the Campus Crossing Apartments on Spring Garden Street. She said police told her it appeared to be an armed robbery gone wrong. However, when asked, investigators stated the case is still active, and they are working to piece together what happened.

Boney is pleading for someone to come forward.

"It's always good to contact the police and tell them what you know, but if you don't feel comfortable doing that, find a clergy member, find a teacher,” Boney said. “Even if you go to the housing office, talk to them. You don't necessarily have to give your name, just tell them what you know."

She said Davion was always playing sports. Even though he had asthma, he powered through it because he loved football, soccer, and track so much. His mom said she will miss his welcoming smile and his ability to always make her laugh.

“He liked to travel, he was a bit of a comedian also, he always had a smile on his face,” she said.

Boney, who graduated from an HBCU, said Davion was proud to attend one as well. She wants everyone to remember her son for the special person he truly was.

“Davion was an athlete, he was a brother, he was a great friend to many. He believed that education was the key to his future," she said.

Boney lives in Wallace, North Carolina, nearly 200 miles away from where Davion was gunned down. She takes comfort in knowing her son had a friendly neighbor by his side as he took his last breath.

"He told me, 'I did not leave his side until the police left.’ He said, 'Even once the paramedics took over, I stayed with him. Even after I saw him close his eyes, I stayed with him.' And I told him, 'Thank you.’ A mother can't ask for more than that, particularly if she can't be there, to know that somebody else cared enough."

Police say there are still no suspects or persons of interest. If you know anything, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers, and you can remain anonymous.
